Overview
Gelatin-iodine contrast medium is an investigational radiopaque formulation developed by Dazhou Central Hospital for use in interventional oncology. It is a combination of gelatin, a proteinaceous substance derived from collagen that provides viscosity and potential embolic properties, and an iodinated contrast medium that provides radiopacity. In clinical trials, it is used as a dopant for ethanol to create a "drug-doped ethanol chemical dissolution agent" for the percutaneous treatment of small hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). This approach aims to improve the localization and monitoring of ethanol dissolution therapy by ensuring the therapeutic agent remains within the tumor boundaries and is visible under imaging guidance such as CT or fluoroscopy.
