GELSYN-3 is a sterile, non-pyrogenic, viscoelastic solution of sodium hyaluronate (hyaluronic acid) indicated for the treatment of pain in osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee. Developed by Institut Biochimique SA (IBSA) and marketed in the U.S. by Bioventus, it is a three-injection viscosupplement regimen. The active ingredient is a high-molecular-weight sodium hyaluronate (16.8 mg/2 mL) produced by bacterial fermentation. GELSYN-3 works by temporarily restoring the viscoelastic properties of the synovial fluid, providing essential lubrication and cushioning to the knee joint. This mechanical action helps to reduce friction, alleviate pain, and improve joint mobility in patients who have failed to respond adequately to conservative non-pharmacologic therapy and simple analgesics. It was FDA approved in 2014 and provides pain relief for up to 6 months.
