Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The GelVac seasonal flu vaccine is a recombinant protein-based vaccine candidate developed by Akston Biosciences using its proprietary GelVac™ platform. The technology utilizes Fc-fusion proteins, where influenza virus antigens—specifically the globular head of the hemagglutinin (HA) protein—are fused to a modified human immunoglobulin Fc domain. This design is intended to enhance the immune response by targeting the vaccine to Fc-receptors on antigen-presenting cells (APCs), facilitating efficient uptake and processing. A significant feature of the GelVac platform is its high thermal stability, which potentially allows the vaccine to be stored and transported at room temperature, bypassing the need for a traditional cold chain. The seasonal flu candidate is designed as a multi-valent formulation to provide protection against the predominant circulating strains of Influenza A and B.
