Overview

gem-Dinitroalkyl benzene compound 13 is a research-stage small molecule nitric oxide (NO)-releasing agent developed by researchers at the University of Turin and the University of Florence. It belongs to a novel class of gem-dinitroalkyl benzene derivatives designed to act as intraocular pressure (IOP)-lowering agents for the treatment of glaucoma and ocular hypertension. The compound functions by releasing nitric oxide, which activates the nitric oxide/cGMP signaling pathway, leading to smooth muscle relaxation and increased aqueous humor outflow. In preclinical rabbit models of both transient and chronic ocular hypertension, compound 13 demonstrated significant and sustained IOP reduction over five days, showing a pharmacological profile similar to the established NO donor molsidomine.
