Gem-dinitroalkyl benzene compound 9 is a small molecule nitric oxide (NO)-releasing agent developed by researchers at the Università degli Studi di Torino and the Università di Firenze. It belongs to a novel class of gem-dinitroalkyl benzene derivatives designed to lower intraocular pressure (IOP) for the treatment of glaucoma and ocular hypertension. The compound acts as an NO donor, promoting the relaxation of ocular tissues to facilitate aqueous humor drainage. In preclinical rabbit models of both transient and chronic (carbomer-induced) ocular hypertension, topical administration of a 1% solution of Compound 9 demonstrated significant IOP-lowering activity, with efficacy comparable to the vasodilator molsidomine and sustained effects observed over several days in chronic models.
