Overview

GemBion is a gemcitabine-based oncology product developed and marketed by Symbion Life Science. As a nucleoside analogue, it acts as a pyrimidine antimetabolite that inhibits DNA synthesis. Gemcitabine is a prodrug that is intracellularly metabolized into active diphosphate (dFdCDP) and triphosphate (dFdCTP) nucleosides. dFdCDP inhibits ribonucleotide reductase, thereby reducing the pool of deoxynucleotide triphosphates available for DNA synthesis, while dFdCTP competes with deoxycytidine triphosphate for incorporation into DNA, leading to DNA strand termination and apoptosis. GemBion is primarily indicated for the treatment of various solid tumors, including pancreatic cancer, non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), breast cancer, bladder cancer, and ovarian cancer. It is administered intravenously as an injection.
