gemifloxacin

Gemifloxacin is a synthetic broad-spectrum antibacterial agent belonging to the fluoroquinolone class of antibiotics. It is primarily used for the treatment of acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis and mild to moderate community-acquired pneumonia caused by susceptible bacteria. Gemifloxacin acts by inhibiting bacterial DNA synthesis through inhibition of two key enzymes, DNA gyrase (topoisomerase II) and topoisomerase IV, which are essential for bacterial replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This mechanism results in bactericidal activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms[1][2][5][6]. The drug was available as an oral tablet formulation under the brand name Factive[1][4]. Gemifloxacin has been discontinued in the US market[8].
