gemigliptin

Gemigliptin is a potent, selective, and long-acting dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor developed by LG Life Sciences (now LG Chem) for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. It works by inhibiting the DPP-4 enzyme, which is responsible for the degradation of incretin hormones such as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP). By preventing the breakdown of these hormones, gemigliptin increases insulin secretion and suppresses glucagon release in a glucose-dependent manner, thereby improving glycemic control. It is typically administered orally once daily and has shown efficacy both as monotherapy and in combination with other antidiabetic agents like metformin, SGLT2 inhibitors, and sulfonylureas. Gemigliptin is approved in several countries, including South Korea, and has been studied for potential pleiotropic effects in metabolic syndrome and diabetic complications.
