Overview

Gemini-curcumin is a nanoparticle formulation of curcumin (diferuloylmethane) that utilizes gemini surfactants as a delivery system to enhance the solubility, stability, and bioavailability of the active compound. Gemini surfactants are a unique class of surfactants consisting of two hydrophilic head groups and two hydrophobic tails connected by a spacer, which allows for efficient encapsulation of hydrophobic molecules like curcumin. This formulation has been primarily investigated in preclinical research for its antineoplastic properties, particularly in colorectal cancer. It exerts its effects by modulating the expression of various long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) and regulating key cellular pathways, including the p53 signaling pathway, cell cycle progression, and NF-kappaB signaling. Studies have shown that Gemini-curcumin can induce apoptosis and cell cycle arrest in cancer cell lines such as HT-29.
