Overview

Gemmis is a brand-name generic formulation of gemcitabine, an antimetabolite antineoplastic agent developed and marketed by TTY Biopharm. As a pyrimidine nucleoside analog, gemcitabine is metabolized intracellularly into active diphosphate and triphosphate nucleosides. The cytotoxic effect is primarily due to the inhibition of DNA synthesis through two mechanisms: the diphosphate inhibits ribonucleotide reductase, reducing the pool of deoxynucleotide triphosphates, and the triphosphate competes with dCTP for incorporation into DNA, resulting in "masked chain termination" that prevents DNA repair. Gemmis is indicated for the treatment of various solid tumors, including locally advanced or metastatic pancreatic cancer, non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), bladder cancer, breast cancer, and ovarian cancer.
