Overview

GEMS-insulin (Glucose-Responsive Insulin) is an experimental, next-generation insulin therapy designed to automatically adjust its activity based on the patient's blood glucose levels. Developed as part of a collaborative effort involving researchers at institutions like the **Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)** and supported by organizations such as **JDRF**, the GEMS-insulin platform utilizes a glucose-sensing mechanism—often involving phenylboronic acid (PBA) or similar glucose-binding moieties—integrated into the insulin molecule or its delivery vehicle. This "smart" insulin remains largely inactive at normal or low glucose levels but becomes rapidly active when blood sugar rises, thereby mimicking the physiological response of pancreatic beta cells. The primary indication is for the treatment of **Type 1 Diabetes** and potentially insulin-dependent **Type 2 Diabetes**, with the goal of reducing the risk of hypoglycemia while maintaining tight glycemic control.
