Overview

Gene-edited porcine red blood cells (GE-pRBCs) are a specialized xenotransplantation-based biological product developed by **ClonOrgan Biotechnology**. These cells are derived from pigs that have undergone multiple genetic modifications—typically the knockout of key xenoantigens such as alpha-1,3-galactose (GGTA1), N-glycolylneuraminic acid (CMAH), and the SDa antigen (B4GALNT2)—to prevent hyperacute immune rejection and rapid hemolysis when exposed to human or non-human primate physiological environments. The primary application of GE-pRBCs is to serve as a standardized and scalable **oxygen carrier** for **normothermic machine perfusion (NMP)**. NMP is an ex vivo technology used to preserve and evaluate donor organs (such as kidneys, livers, or hearts) at body temperature, requiring a functional oxygen carrier to maintain aerobic metabolism. By replacing human red blood cells in these systems, GE-pRBCs aim to overcome the limitations of blood supply and improve the quality of organ preservation prior to transplantation.
