Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Generex Oral-lyn is a proprietary buccal insulin spray developed by Generex Biotechnology for the treatment of type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Unlike traditional injectable insulins, it is administered as an oral spray using the RapidMist device and absorbed through the buccal mucosa (lining of the mouth), providing a needle-free alternative for prandial (mealtime) insulin delivery. The formulation contains human insulin and aims to improve patient compliance by eliminating injections. Mechanistically, it acts as an agonist at the insulin receptor to facilitate glucose uptake and lower blood sugar levels. Additional reported mechanisms include stimulation of ornithine decarboxylase, phosphokinase, and tyrosine aminotransferase enzymes[1][4][8]. The product has been approved for use in several countries including India (as "Oral Recosulin") and Ecuador; in the United States it was available under an FDA Treatment IND protocol but not full marketing approval[3][4][6][8]. Development efforts have included enhanced formulations with increased bioavailability[10].
