Overview

Gengnianchun (GNC) is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal formula specifically developed for the management of perimenopausal syndrome. Originally formulated by Professor Wang Cai-yuan at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital of Fudan University, the recipe is composed of five primary herbs: *Radix Rehmanniae*, *Rhizoma Anemarrhenae*, *Cortex Phellodendri*, *Herba Epimedii*, and *Herba Leonuri*. GNC is designed to "tonify the kidney" and "clear heat" according to TCM principles. Pharmacologically, it acts as a phytoestrogen complex that modulates the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axis and interacts with estrogen receptors (ERα and ERβ). Clinical and preclinical studies suggest that GNC can alleviate vasomotor symptoms (hot flashes), improve mood and sleep disturbances, and provide osteoprotective effects without the adverse proliferative risks on the endometrium typically associated with conventional hormone replacement therapy.
