Overview

genistein + interleukin-2 is a combination therapy investigated by Northwestern University for the treatment of metastatic melanoma and metastatic renal cell carcinoma. Interleukin-2 (IL-2) is a potent cytokine that promotes the expansion and activation of T lymphocytes and natural killer (NK) cells, facilitating an immune-mediated attack on tumor cells. Genistein, a naturally occurring isoflavone found in soy, acts as a non-specific tyrosine kinase inhibitor and antioxidant. In this combination, genistein is hypothesized to enhance the anti-tumor effects of high-dose IL-2 by inhibiting tumor cell proliferation, inducing apoptosis, and potentially modulating the immune environment to favor cell expansion and gene expression profiles associated with clinical response.
