Overview

Genistin is the **7-O-beta-D-glucoside form of genistein**, a naturally occurring isoflavone glycoside primarily found in soybeans and other legumes. It serves as the main dietary source of genistein, with genistin being converted to genistein (the aglycone) during fermentation or digestion of soy products. Genistin itself is structurally characterized by a genistein molecule attached to a glucose moiety at position 7. Its pharmacological properties are thus largely mediated by conversion to genistein in vivo, which is recognized for **phytoestrogenic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects**, among others. Genistein (and thus genistin) has been studied in relation to cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, menopausal symptoms, and cancer prevention, primarily due to its ability to modulate estrogen receptors and inhibit tyrosine kinases and topoisomerase II. Genistin itself is not marketed as a standalone pharmaceutical; its relevance is as a dietary component or supplement, and as a precursor to genistein[4][5].
