Overview

This intranasal vaccine is being developed by BlueWillow Biologics, in collaboration with Medigen Vaccine Biologics, for the prophylactic and therapeutic treatment of genital herpes caused by herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2). The vaccine formulation consists of recombinant HSV-2 surface glycoproteins gD2 and gB2 combined with BlueWillow's proprietary NanoVax adjuvant, an oil-in-water nanoemulsion (NE01). Delivered via the intranasal route, the vaccine is designed to elicit both mucosal and systemic immune responses, providing protection at the primary site of viral entry. Preclinical studies in guinea pig models have demonstrated high efficacy, with a 92% prevention rate in prophylactic studies and a significant reduction (over 50%) in viral shedding and recurrent lesions in therapeutic settings. BlueWillow was awarded a U.S. patent (number 10,206,996) for this vaccine technology in 2019.
