Genta-Coll resorb is a resorbable hemostatic collagen sponge implant containing the aminoglycoside antibiotic gentamicin sulfate. It is a local drug-device combination composed of equine-derived collagen fibrils and gentamicin sulfate. The collagen matrix acts as a physical hemostatic agent by activating blood coagulation upon contact with blood, while simultaneously serving as a local delivery vehicle that releases gentamicin to provide sustained, high local antibiotic concentrations at the surgical site. This dual action is designed to achieve rapid hemostasis and prevent or treat surgical site infections in clean or contaminated wounds, septic surgery, and high-risk surgical procedures (such as cardiothoracic, orthopedic, and vascular surgeries). While widely approved and marketed for surgical hemostasis and infection prophylaxis, a clinical trial investigating its use as an adjunct therapy for acute and chronic osteomyelitis of long bone shafts was terminated early due to recruitment challenges.
