Overview

Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections. It works by inhibiting protein synthesis in susceptible bacteria, leading to cell death. Gentamicin is primarily effective against aerobic gram-negative bacteria, though it also shows activity against some gram-positive organisms. Gentamicin is bactericidal and acts by inhibiting protein synthesis in susceptible bacteria. As an aminoglycoside antibiotic, it binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit, preventing the formation of the 70S complex. This leads to misreading of the genetic code and inhibition of protein synthesis, ultimately resulting in bacterial cell death. Gentamicin is used to treat serious bacterial infections in many different parts of the body, including: - Blood infections (septicemia) - Meningitis - Urinary tract infections - Respiratory infections (bronchitis, pneumonia) - Gastrointestinal infections - Skin infections and burns - Bone and joint infections - Endocarditis Gentamicin is active against a wide range of bacteria, primarily: - Gram-negative bacteria: Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus species, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacter aerogenes, Serratia species - Some gram-positive bacteria: Staphylococcus species (including methicillin-resistant strains) It is not effective against Neisseria meningitidis, Legionella pneumophila, or anaerobic bacteria.
