Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Gentamicin + lincomycin is an antibiotic combination that leverages the complementary mechanisms of action of both drugs to provide enhanced antimicrobial coverage. This combination enlarges the antibacterial spectrum and enhances the antibacterial effect of lincomycin[3]. Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic effective against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. It works by binding to bacterial ribosomes and inhibiting protein synthesis[10]. Lincomycin is a lincosamide antibiotic primarily effective against gram-positive bacteria including streptococci, pneumococci, and staphylococci, as well as some gram-negative cocci and anaerobic bacteria[2][6]. The combination is particularly useful for treating severe bacterial infections, especially in veterinary medicine where it's used in animal feed and drinking water[5]. The synergistic effect of these antibiotics makes them valuable for treating respiratory, gastrointestinal, and urinary infections, as well as septicemia in domestic animals[5].
