Overview

Gentamicin + metronidazole is a combination of two antibiotics used primarily for the prevention and treatment of mixed aerobic and anaerobic bacterial infections, especially in surgical settings such as abdominal or gynecological procedures. Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that acts by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, inhibiting protein synthesis in susceptible Gram-negative bacteria. Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole antibiotic effective against most anaerobic bacteria and certain protozoa; it works by disrupting DNA synthesis after reduction within anaerobic cells. The combination provides broad-spectrum coverage against both aerobic (gentamicin) and anaerobic (metronidazole) pathogens, making it particularly useful for prophylaxis in surgeries with high risk of contamination or infection involving both types of organisms[1][2][5]. Clinical studies have shown that this combination can be more effective than either agent alone for preventing post-surgical infections, including intra-abdominal abscesses and post-caesarean wound infections[1][2][4].
