Overview

Gentamycin + minocycline is a combination of two antibiotics, gentamicin (an aminoglycoside) and minocycline (a tetracycline derivative), used for their complementary antibacterial spectra. Gentamicin primarily targets gram-negative aerobic and facultative bacilli by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, inhibiting protein synthesis and causing bacterial cell death. Minocycline acts on both gram-positive and some gram-negative bacteria by also binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit but inhibits protein synthesis in a bacteriostatic manner. The combination has demonstrated synergistic effects against certain pathogens, particularly Escherichia coli and Clostridium species, making it potentially useful for mixed infections such as intra-abdominal sepsis where both aerobic/facultative and anaerobic organisms are present. No antagonism between these drugs has been observed at clinically relevant concentrations[1][2][6]. Additionally, preclinical studies suggest that minocycline may reduce gentamicin-induced ototoxicity[3][5].
