Overview

Gentamycin + ornidazole is a combination drug consisting of two active pharmaceutical ingredients: gentamicin, an aminoglycoside antibiotic, and ornidazole, a nitroimidazole antimicrobial. Gentamicin acts by binding to the 30S subunit of bacterial ribosomes, inhibiting protein synthesis and leading to bacterial cell death. It is primarily effective against aerobic Gram-negative bacteria. Ornidazole works by disrupting DNA synthesis in anaerobic bacteria and protozoa through reduction of its nitro group within microbial cells, resulting in cell death. This combination is used for the prophylaxis and treatment of mixed aerobic-anaerobic infections—such as those encountered in intra-abdominal surgeries (e.g., appendectomy or caesarean section)—where both Gram-negative aerobes and anaerobes are likely pathogens[1][2]. The combination leverages the complementary spectra of activity to provide broad coverage against common surgical site pathogens.
