Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Genteal Gel is an over-the-counter ophthalmic lubricant containing 0.3% hypromellose. It is designed to provide relief from dry eye symptoms by mimicking natural tears and providing a protective, viscous film over the ocular surface. In a clinical trial sponsored by the Lifelong Vision Foundation, Genteal Gel was utilized as a placebo/comparator to evaluate the efficacy of ganciclovir gel (Zirgan) in patients with adenoviral conjunctivitis. While it lacks intrinsic antiviral activity, it is used to manage ocular irritation and maintain hydration of the cornea and conjunctiva. The product is widely used for the temporary relief of burning and irritation due to dryness of the eye and for protection against further irritation.
