Gentian root is a botanical medicinal product derived from the dried rhizomes and roots of *Gentiana lutea*. It is widely recognized in pharmacopoeias as a bitter tonic (stomachic) used to treat digestive complaints such as dyspepsia, flatulence, and loss of appetite. The therapeutic effects are primarily attributed to secoiridoid glycosides, including gentiopicroside and amarogentin, which are among the most bitter substances known. These compounds stimulate bitter taste receptors (TAS2Rs) in the oral cavity, triggering a cephalic phase of digestion that increases the secretion of saliva, gastric juice, and bile. Beyond its use as a monotherapy, gentian root is a key component in several multi-herb pharmaceutical products, such as Sinupret, used for the treatment of acute and chronic sinusitis.
