Overview

Gentian violet cation is the active moiety of gentian (crystal) violet—a synthetic triphenylmethane dye with broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties. It acts as an antiseptic and antifungal agent and has been used for over a century in medicine to treat fungal infections (such as oral thrush and skin mycoses), bacterial infections (notably gram-positive bacteria like Staphylococcus species), and occasionally for anti-helminthic or anti-trypanosomal purposes[1][2][4][5][7][10]. The mechanism involves dissociation into positive ions that interact with negatively charged components of microbial cell walls (lipopolysaccharide in bacteria; peptidoglycan; DNA). This interaction leads to cell penetration and DNA binding—disrupting replication and inhibiting cell growth. Gentian violet also acts as a mutagen/mitotic poison by interfering with mitosis. Additional mechanisms include dissipation of membrane potential via increased permeability—leading to respiratory inhibition—and photodynamic action mediated by free radicals[5][8][10]. It is considered effective against many fungi (e.g., Candida spp.), some gram-positive bacteria, but less so against gram-negative organisms[7].
