GEO-ZM01 is a recombinant viral vector vaccine candidate developed by GeoVax Labs for the prevention of Zika virus (ZIKV) infection. Utilizing the Modified Vaccinia Ankara (MVA) platform, the vaccine is engineered to express the ZIKV pre-membrane (prM) and envelope (E) proteins. Upon administration, these proteins are produced by host cells and self-assemble into non-infectious virus-like particles (VLPs) that mimic the structure of the native virus. This process triggers a comprehensive immune response, primarily characterized by the production of neutralizing antibodies against the ZIKV envelope protein, which is essential for viral attachment and entry into host cells. GEO-ZM01 is designed to provide protective immunity with a single dose and aims to avoid the risk of antibody-dependent enhancement (ADE), a significant challenge in the development of vaccines for flaviviruses.
