GEO-ZM02 is a prophylactic vaccine candidate developed by GeoVax Labs for the prevention of Zika virus infection. It is based on a recombinant Modified Vaccinia Ankara (MVA) vector platform encoding the nonstructural protein 1 (NS1) of Zika virus. Unlike other Zika vaccines that target the envelope protein and may risk antibody-dependent enhancement (ADE), GEO-ZM02 induces protective T-cell responses without generating neutralizing antibodies, thereby eliminating ADE risk. Preclinical studies in mice demonstrated that a single intramuscular dose provided 100% protection against lethal Zika challenge, with further studies ongoing in non-human primates. The vaccine’s design also has potential to block transmission from humans back to mosquito vectors due to its NS1-based mechanism[3][4][5][8][9].
