Overview
*Geotrichum candidum* is a yeast-like fungus that is a common member of the human microbiome and is widely used in the food industry, particularly in cheesemaking. In a medical and pharmacological context, it is primarily utilized as an allergen extract for the diagnosis and treatment of fungal allergies. As a diagnostic agent, it is used in skin prick testing to identify hypersensitivity to the fungus. As a therapeutic agent, it is employed in allergen immunotherapy (hyposensitization) to modulate the immune response in allergic individuals. Additionally, *Geotrichum candidum* is used in certain homeopathic preparations intended to treat geotrichosis (infection caused by the fungus) or various digestive and respiratory conditions. The mechanism of action in immunotherapy involves the induction of immune tolerance by shifting the immune response from a Th2-dominated allergic profile to a Th1/Treg-mediated regulatory profile, thereby reducing IgE-mediated mast cell degranulation.
