GeoVax's Hepatitis B therapeutic vaccine is an investigational immunotherapy designed to treat chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Developed using GeoVax's proprietary Modified Vaccinia Ankara-Virus Like Particle (MVA-VLP) platform in collaboration with Georgia State University, the vaccine utilizes a modified vaccinia Ankara (MVA) viral vector to encode specific HBV antigens. Upon administration, the vector induces the patient's own cells to produce self-assembling, non-infectious virus-like particles (VLPs). This approach is engineered to trigger a comprehensive immune response, including both neutralizing antibodies (humoral) and T-cell mediated (cellular) activity, aiming to overcome the immune tolerance or exhaustion characteristic of chronic HBV. The candidate is intended to be used potentially as a monotherapy or as part of a combination regimen with standard-of-care antivirals to achieve a functional cure for the millions of individuals living with chronic HBV.
