Overview

Geraniin is a prominent hydrolyzable tannin, specifically an ellagitannin, characterized by its dehydrohexahydroxydiphenoyl (DHHDP) group. It is naturally found in various plants, including *Geranium thunbergii* and *Acer pseudosieboldianum*. Geraniin has demonstrated significant biological activities, including anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, and anti-proliferative effects. In oncological research, particularly concerning prostate cancer, geraniin has been shown to inhibit cell proliferation and induce apoptosis. Its mechanism of action involves the inhibition of DNA methyltransferases (DNMT1, DNMT3a, and DNMT3b), which facilitates the demethylation and re-expression of silenced genes such as glutathione S-transferase P1 (GSTP1). This epigenetic modulation makes it a compound of interest for chemopreventive and therapeutic strategies in cancers driven by DNA hypermethylation.
