Overview
Geranium wilfordii extract (GWE) is a natural product derived from the traditional Chinese medicinal herb *Geranium wilfordii Maxim*, also known as Herba Geranii or lao-guan-cao. This ethanolic extract contains a variety of bioactive compounds, including geraniin, corilagin, gallic acid, quercetin, and 1,2,3,6-tetra-O-galloyl-β-D-glucose. GWE exhibits a broad range of pharmacological activities, including anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, antiviral, and antibacterial effects. Mechanistically, it has been identified as an inhibitor of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and has been shown to modulate key signaling hub genes such as NOTCH2, HDAC2, and MAPK1. Research suggests its potential therapeutic utility in treating chronic inflammatory diseases like asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout, as well as viral infections such as HSV-2 and various gastrointestinal disorders. It is currently utilized primarily as a research compound and in traditional medicine contexts.
