Germanium-68 chloride is an experimental radiopharmaceutical consisting of the radioisotope germanium-68 in chloride form. Developed by the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Bordeaux, it is being evaluated for the treatment of unresectable liver tumors, including hepatocellular carcinoma and liver metastases from pancreatic adenocarcinoma or cholangiocarcinoma. Germanium-68 has a physical half-life of approximately 271 days and decays via electron capture into gallium-68, which subsequently emits positrons. When administered via intra-arterial injection, the drug is intended to deliver localized internal radiation therapy to tumor tissues, leveraging the long half-life of the parent isotope to provide sustained irradiation and potentially serve as a long-lived tracer for PET imaging.
