Overview

Germinated barley, also known as Maiya in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is derived from the sprouted and dried grains of Hordeum vulgare L. In TCM, it is characterized by sweet and neutral properties and is associated with the Spleen, Stomach, and Liver meridians. Traditionally, it is used to aid digestion, harmonize the stomach, restrain lactation, and promote the flow of liver qi. Modern research indicates that total barley maiya alkaloids (TBMA), including hordenine, can inhibit prolactin secretion by modulating dopamine D2 receptors and protein kinase A targets. Furthermore, it has been shown to reduce dopamine D2 receptor expression through epigenetic mechanisms, specifically by inhibiting DNA methyltransferase-dependent DRD2 methylation. Beyond its role in prolactin regulation, germinated barley has also been investigated as a prebiotic for the nutraceutical treatment of ulcerative colitis, promoting beneficial gut bacteria.
