Overview

Femiane is a combined low-dose oral contraceptive (COC) containing the progestin gestodene (75 mcg) and the estrogen ethinyl estradiol (30 mcg). Developed by Schering AG (now Bayer), it is used primarily for the prevention of pregnancy. The mechanism of action involves the suppression of gonadotropins, which inhibits ovulation, increases cervical mucus viscosity to impede sperm penetration, and alters the endometrium to reduce the likelihood of implantation. It is typically administered in a 21-day cycle followed by a 7-day hormone-free interval. Femiane is marketed internationally and is often prescribed for women who experience side effects like weight gain or breakthrough bleeding on other progestogens.
