Overview

GFP-Expressing Mesenchymal Stem Cells (GFP-MSCs) are mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) that have been genetically engineered to express Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP). This modification serves primarily as a research tool, allowing for the visualization and tracking of these cells in both in vitro and in vivo studies. The GFP acts as a reporter gene, enabling researchers to monitor cell migration, engraftment, survival, and differentiation within various biological systems and disease models. Mesenchymal stem cells themselves are multipotent stromal cells characterized by their self-renewal capacity, adherence to plastic, and ability to differentiate into multiple cell lineages, including osteocytes, chondrocytes, and adipocytes. They exert therapeutic effects through diverse mechanisms such as immunomodulation, paracrine signaling (secreting growth factors, cytokines, and extracellular matrix proteins), and anti-apoptotic effects, all contributing to tissue repair and regeneration. GFP-MSCs are extensively utilized in preclinical research to investigate the potential of cell-based therapies and regenerative medicine applications across a wide range of conditions, including cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, and various forms of tissue injury.
