Overview

GCP-001 (gGlu-HMRG) is an activatable fluorescent probe developed by GORYO Chemical for the intraoperative detection of cancer, specifically breast cancer. The probe is based on the hydroxymethyl rhodamine green (HMRG) fluorophore, which is initially in a non-fluorescent state due to quenching by a gamma-glutamyl group. Upon contact with the enzyme gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT), which is frequently overexpressed on the surface of cancer cells, the gamma-glutamyl group is enzymatically cleaved, rapidly generating a strong fluorescent signal. This mechanism allows for real-time, high-contrast visualization of tumor margins and micro-metastases during surgery, aiding in complete resection. The agent has been evaluated in Phase 1 clinical trials at Kyushu University Beppu Hospital and is being developed in partnership with Solasia Pharma.
