gH1-Qbeta is a virus-like particle (VLP) vaccine candidate developed for the prevention of the 2009 H1N1 pandemic influenza. Developed through a collaboration between Singapore's Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and Cytos Biotechnology, the vaccine utilizes Cytos' proprietary bacteriophage Qbeta VLP technology as an immunological carrier. The vaccine consists of the globular head (gH) domain of the influenza hemagglutinin (HA) protein from the A/California/07/2009 (H1N1) strain chemically conjugated to the surface of the Qbeta VLP. This multivalent display of the antigen is designed to mimic the structure of a virus, thereby stimulating a robust B-cell response and the production of neutralizing antibodies without the use of live influenza virus. The vaccine was produced using a recombinant method in E. coli. Although it successfully completed a Phase I clinical trial in 2013 demonstrating safety and immunogenicity in healthy volunteers, further development was discontinued.
