ghrelin

Ghrelin is a 28-amino acid peptide hormone, primarily produced in the stomach, that serves as the endogenous ligand for the growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHSR-1a). In research conducted by the University of Aarhus (Aarhus University Hospital), it is being investigated for its metabolic effects in patients with hypopituitarism and growth hormone deficiency (GHD). Specifically, studies have explored its non-growth-hormone-dependent effects on insulin sensitivity, lipid metabolism (often in conjunction with the antilipolytic agent Acipimox), thirst sensation, and sodium excretion. The compound used is typically the acylated form (acyl ghrelin), administered via intravenous infusion to evaluate its role in energy homeostasis and metabolic regulation in GHD populations.
