GI-5005 is an investigational therapeutic vaccine developed for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. It consists of whole, heat-killed recombinant yeast genetically modified to express HCV-specific protein targets. The drug is designed to elicit a cellular immune response against HCV-infected cells by stimulating both innate immunity via Toll-like receptors (TLRs) and adaptive immunity through antigen-specific helper T cell (CD4) and killer T cell (CD8) responses. This mechanism aims to eliminate infected hepatic cells and may work synergistically with standard antiviral therapies or serve as an option for patients intolerant to interferon-based regimens. Developed using GlobeImmune's proprietary Tarmogen active immunotherapy platform, GI-5005 has been evaluated in Phase 2 clinical trials in combination with pegylated interferon and ribavirin[1][2][6][7].
