Overview

Gimsilumab is a human monoclonal antibody developed for the treatment of inflammatory conditions, particularly those involving cytokine release syndromes. Its primary mechanism of action is the inhibition of granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), a cytokine involved in driving inflammation and immune cell activation. By targeting GM-CSF, gimsilumab aims to reduce excessive inflammatory responses that can lead to tissue damage, such as those observed in severe respiratory diseases and acute lung injury. The drug was notably investigated for use in COVID-19-related acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) due to its potential to mitigate harmful immune overactivation.
