Overview

Ginger is the rhizome of the plant Zingiber officinale and has been used for thousands of years in traditional medicine systems such as Chinese and Indian medicine. It contains bioactive compounds like gingerol and shogaol that are responsible for its medicinal properties. Ginger exhibits anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-nausea effects. Its primary mechanisms include promoting gastrointestinal motility (helping food move through the digestive tract), reducing nausea (including morning sickness in pregnancy and chemotherapy-induced nausea), alleviating pain (such as menstrual cramps and osteoarthritis), supporting immune function, lowering cholesterol levels, improving insulin sensitivity, reducing bloating/gas/constipation by enhancing digestion, and possibly providing cardiovascular protection. Ginger is consumed fresh or dried as a spice or supplement; it is not regulated as a pharmaceutical drug but widely used as a dietary supplement[1][2][3][4][5][6].
