Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ginger oil is an essential oil derived from the rhizome of the plant Zingiber officinale (ginger) through steam distillation. It is primarily used as a dietary supplement and in aromatherapy for its reputed anti-nausea, digestive, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and carminative properties. Ginger oil contains active constituents such as zingiberene, camphene, β-phellandrene, α-pinene, geranial, β-bisabolene, β-sesquiphellandrene and curcumene[5]. Its mechanism of action is not fully elucidated but is believed to involve modulation of gastrointestinal motility and possible anti-inflammatory effects[4][5]. Ginger (including its essential oil) has been traditionally used for relief from nausea (including motion sickness), vomiting, stomach upset/dyspepsia[1][4], joint pain/inflammation[7], menstrual discomforts[4][7], and other conditions. The FDA recognizes ginger as generally safe when used appropriately; however it has not approved it for any specific medical indication[2][4].
