Gingiva-derived mesenchymal stem cells (GMSCs) are a unique subpopulation of multipotent progenitor cells isolated from the gingival lamina propria. These cells exhibit the hallmark characteristics of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), including high proliferative capacity, stable phenotype, and the ability to differentiate into osteogenic, adipogenic, and chondrogenic lineages. GMSCs are distinguished by their relative ease of harvest via minimally invasive dental procedures and their potent immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties. In clinical applications, GMSCs are primarily investigated for periodontal regeneration, where they are often seeded onto scaffolds (such as collagen) to facilitate the repair of alveolar bone defects and the restoration of lost periodontal support tissues in patients with chronic periodontitis.
