Overview
Ginkgo biloba extract (GB or EGb) is an investigational herbal extract being evaluated by Assiut University for the treatment of asymmetrical intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) in pregnancy. The extract is composed of terpene trilactones, including ginkgolides A, B, C, J and bilobalide, as well as flavonol glycosides such as kaempferol, quercetin, and isorhamnetin. Its therapeutic mechanism in IUGR involves anti-inflammatory and antioxidant actions that are believed to improve placental function and feto-maternal blood flow. Clinical research conducted at Assiut Women's Health Hospital has demonstrated that oral administration of the extract during the third trimester can significantly improve estimated fetal weight and Doppler blood flow parameters in pregnant women with IUGR.
