Tavonin is a standardized herbal extract of *Ginkgo biloba* leaves, specifically the **EGb 761** formulation developed by Dr. Willmar Schwabe. It is indicated for the treatment of cognitive impairment associated with aging and dementia (including Alzheimer's and vascular dementia), as well as for the improvement of cerebral and peripheral microcirculation. The extract contains a complex mixture of ginkgo flavone glycosides and terpene lactones, including ginkgolides and bilobalide. Its mechanism of action involves the antagonism of platelet-activating factor (PAF) receptors, which reduces blood viscosity and improves blood flow, alongside potent antioxidant activity that protects neurons and vascular endothelial cells from oxidative damage. Tavonin is also used to manage symptoms such as tinnitus, vertigo, and intermittent claudication in peripheral arterial occlusive disease.
