Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ginkgoforte is a standardized herbal dietary supplement containing *Ginkgo biloba* extract (GBE), specifically developed and marketed by Blackmores. It is primarily used to alleviate symptoms of age-related cognitive impairment, including memory loss and dementia of the Alzheimer's and vascular types. The extract is standardized to contain 24% ginkgo flavonol glycosides and 6% terpene lactones (ginkgolides and bilobalide). Ginkgoforte's mechanism of action involves potent antioxidant and free radical scavenging properties, which provide neuroprotection. Additionally, it modulates neurotransmitter systems, particularly by enhancing cholinergic transmission through increased acetylcholine release and the upregulation of muscarinic receptors in the hippocampus. Clinical studies have demonstrated that chronic administration of Ginkgoforte can improve working memory performance and influence brain electrical activity, specifically steady-state visually evoked potential (SSVEP) topography, suggesting more efficient neural processing during cognitive tasks.
