Overview

Ginkgolide is a pharmaceutical-grade injection containing terpene lactones (specifically ginkgolides A, B, and C) derived from *Ginkgo biloba* extract. Developed and manufactured by Chengdu Baiyu Pharmaceutical, it is primarily used as an adjunctive treatment for acute ischemic stroke. The drug functions as a potent antagonist of the platelet-activating factor (PAF) receptor, thereby inhibiting platelet aggregation and reducing the risk of thrombus formation and reocclusion following thrombolysis. Additionally, it exhibits neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory properties by modulating cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-6, protecting the blood-brain barrier, and reducing ischemia-reperfusion injury. It has been evaluated in the Phase 4 GIANT trial by the Second Affiliated Hospital, School of Medicine, Zhejiang University, in combination with intravenous alteplase.
