Overview

Ginkgolide A is a highly active platelet activating factor (PAF) antagonist, classified as a diterpene lactone isolated from the leaves of the Ginkgo biloba tree. It belongs to the class of organic compounds known as ginkgolides and bilobalides, which are characterized by their rigid hexacyclic C20 trilactone structure. Ginkgolide A exhibits potential in treating various inflammatory and immunological disorders due to its ability to inhibit PAF-mediated processes. Its mechanisms include anti-inflammatory effects through inhibition of interleukins (IL-5, IL-13), MAPK pathway inhibition, toll-like receptor inhibition, and suppression of arachidonic acid inflammatory pathways. Additionally, it demonstrates anti-coagulant activity via PAF antagonism and anti-apoptotic effects through TNF receptor inhibition[1][2][6].
