Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ginseng refers to the root of plants in the genus Panax (primarily Panax ginseng and Panax quinquefolius). It is a widely used herbal supplement and traditional medicine ingredient. The main active components are called *ginsenosides* (or panaxosides), which are believed to have adaptogenic effects—helping the body resist physical and mental stress. Ginsenosides may also modulate immune function, exert antioxidant activity, influence blood sugar regulation by affecting insulin levels, and support cardiovascular health. Ginseng is commonly used for claims such as boosting energy and focus, supporting immune system health, improving cognitive function in middle-aged adults (when combined with other ingredients), reducing fatigue (including in multiple sclerosis), improving sexual function in erectile dysfunction or postmenopausal women, and possibly lowering blood sugar after meals in type 2 diabetes. However, most uses lack robust clinical evidence or FDA approval[1][2][5][6][7]. Ginsenosides are considered responsible for most pharmacological actions; other constituents include polysaccharides with potential immunomodulatory effects[5]. The safety profile is generally favorable when used short-term at recommended doses; long-term use may cause side effects such as insomnia or hormone-like effects[6].
